New reports of restrictions on the use of bridges in high wind conditions, and of vehicles overturning on bridges have increased in the past decade, due to the proliferation in high-sided vehicles, with lighter bodywork. Little data are available to the designer to enable him to try to minimise the adverse effect of wind on his structure. Recently local barriers have been installed on two major U.K. bridges - the Severn suspension bridge and the Queen Elizabeth II bridge - and continuous barriers have been adopted on the Second Severn Bridge. In addition, wind tunnel tests have been undertaken on other bridge configurations. These are outlined and the lessons learned from experience on the bridges described. A brief note on other adverse effects, such as embankments, is provided.
