Abstract: The calibration method reported here makes use of thereflectances of several large, uniform areas determinedfrom calibrated and atmospherically corrected SPOTHaute Resolution Visible (HRV) scenes of White Sands,New Mexico. These reflectances were used to predict theradiances in the first two channels of the NOAA-11Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR). Thedigital counts in the AVHRR image corresponding tothese known reflectance areas were determined by theuse of two image registration techniques. The plots ofdigital counts versus pixel radiance provided thecalibration gains and offsets for the AVHRR. Areduction in the gains of 4% and 13% in channels 1 and2, respectively, was found during the period 19November 1988 to 21 June 1990. An error budget ispresented for the method and is extended to the case ofcross-calibrating sensors on the same orbital platformin the Earth Observing System (Eos) era.!
