Of all the excitation mechanisms that cause vibrations of tube bundles in steam generators and heat exchangers, fluidelastic instability is the one that can cause the most fatigue and fretting-wear problems. Most of the work done so far indicates that fluidelastic instability is more likely to happen in the direction transverse to the flow. However, in a recent paper, Mureithi et al. demonstrated that instability can happen in the flow direction of an array of tubes subjected to air flow. The scope of this paper is to present the details of the experimental work done to verify if fluidelastic instability can occur for an array of cylinders flexible only in the flow direction subjected to two-phase cross-flow.
