It is shown that the Betti's reciprocal theorem can bej used to significant advantage to obtain global results of interest to mechanics of inclusions. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated through the problem of an externally loaded disc inclusion embedded in an elastic infinite space. The procedure is also applicable to disc inclusions that are partly bonded to the elastic medium provided there are stationary contacts associated with the interface. In these instances, the direct integral equation formulations yield complicated integral equations.
