Tethered helium balloons are known to be useful in applications where a payload must be deployed at altitude for a long duration. However there exists little data about light tethered spheres in a fluid stream. Govardhan & Williamson have recently studied such systems in a controlled laboratory environment. Research on outdoor spherical helium balloons is mainly limited to free meteorological spheres for wind boundary layer measurements. There is thus a need for experimental data on tethered spheres in an outdoor environment. The present work focuses on the experimental characterization of a 3.5 m tethered spherical helium balloon in turbulent winds. The results obtained are compared to those of Govardhan & Williamson and to accepted results from literature. This study will provide the input parameters for the simulation of a tethered helium sphere in wind, which we are pursuing separately.
