Electrokinetic transport plays an important role in mi-crofluidics applications, where, for example, electroos-motic 'slip' at a microchannel wall produces a uniform, laminar velocity profile. Electrokinetic transport also plays a key role in diagnostic techniques for characterizing colloidal dispersions. For example, electroosmotic flow at the surfaces of charged particles dispersed in an electrolyte endows particles with an electrophoretic mobility, which is routinely measured. Theoretical interpretation of the mobility, sedimentation potential, low-frequency conductivity, dielectric response (complex conductivity), and electroacoustic response (dynamic mobility) of dispersions infers the size and charge of the constituent (sub-micron) colloids. Closely related are streaming-potential and streaming-current devices, which are used to 'measure' the charge on macroscopic substrates, as well as the charge density and permeability of porous plugs and coatings [e.g., 9, 10].
