Numerical Simulation of Blood Flow in Coronary Arteries

Atherosclerosis is a common arterial disorder, and it is of particular clinical significance when it occurs in the coronary arteries, since it can result in ischemic heart disease and/or myocardial infarction. The development of atherosclerotic lesions depends on systemic risk factors, including hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and smoking as well as local biomechanical factors. The most important local biomechanical factor appears to be shear stress exerted by flowing blood on the wall of the artery. In this work we review recent progress in understanding the hemodynamic environment within the human right coronary artery, with particular emphasis on biomechanical factors that could promote atherosclerosis.
