Descending tendency of construction activities of new dams and, on the other hand, plenty of existing dams having maintenance problems entails further and more profound investigations in safety assessment and possible remedial measures being considered to upgrade the existing dams. In line with this, the technical and operational restrictions and, or social impacts are to be taken into account. Thus, to fulfill such constrains; planning a construction schedule for rehabilitation works in a manageable manner is a vital task. Remedial measures considered for Mahabad earth-rock fill dam with 47.5 m height founded on deep alluvial foundation comprises three parts: first, dam crest excavation and refill up to the desired level, second and third parts are excavation and refilling the toe foundation materials and construction stabilizing berms with rockfill material at upstream and downstream of the dam body, respectively. The paper reviews the Mahabad dam behavior features and its safety problems since the dam commissioning time in 1970 and then, deals with the operational and technical restrictions associated with the remedial works. At the end the anticipated program for execution of different parts of the dam rehabilitation works will be discussed. This program tailored to meet the requirements for safety and operational limitations during construction period.
