摘要

Most of large dams are equipped with instrumentation for monitoring their deformation. The monitoring surveys are to serve the dual purpose: to verify the design parameters and to provide a warning system in case of an abnormal behavior of the dam and its surroundings. The first aspect is discussed on the example of three earthen dams of a large water reservoir being currently built in Southern California. Displacements and deformation of the dams are monitored by a fully automatic and sophisticated monitoring scheme. Potential applications of the monitoring surveys to the verification of the design parameters are discussed using two sets of geotechnical data in a finite element analysis of deformations.
