For several decades, the rationale that leads to hydrogen age inevitability and the systemic patterns of a fully-developed hydrogen age has been broadly understood—at least by those lucky enough to have had the opportunity to consider the issue. In Canada these rationale and patterns were set out in Hydrogen: National Mission for Canada, the 1987 report of Canada's Advisory Committee on Hydrogen Opportunities, (Dept of Supply and Services, Catalogue No. M27-86/1987E, ISBN 0-662-15544-0). Over the intervening years three trends have become apparent. First, the future has been "unfolding as it should" (or at least much as had been projected). Second, in response to this unfolding, many new industrial, investment and research players have entered the game. Third, those who originally developed the rationale and sniffed the future patterns have had time to refine their thinking. At this eleventh Canadian Hydrogen Conference, it seems appropriate to review the rationale, refine it where appropriate, and reflect on where-we-are-now and what-is-now-pushing-us-along.
