摘要

If there has been one consistent thread that winds through the long and confused history of North American shipyards, it is the need for change driven by adaptation to shifting demands. Unlike the major shipbuilding nations of the rest of the world, the North American domestic industry has never enjoyed a long enough run of consistent supply and demand to develop a dominant industry in the world class sense. As a result, consistent management practice, high productivity, speed of performance, long-term stability and growth with resultant investment have all eluded North American shipyards and will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. So the question to be discussed is how to manage in a future that is unlikely to be significantly different from the current state. The author has spent a quarter of a century managing shipyards on both sides of the 49th parallel and offers his insight of what the future holds.
