This paper describes a new concept for in situ treatment of sediments contaminated with organic contaminants. The concept involves the injection of reactive gases to degrade the contaminants followed by the addition of stabilizing agents to leave a stabilized surface sediment layer. Ozone is the primary reactive gas being considered because of existing research on its ability to successfully degrade some organic contaminants. However, the mechanical concept could employ other reactive gases, e.g. hydrogen, in the same manner. The concept could be applicable to hot spot remediation or the stabilization of surface sediments over large areas. The success of such a device depends upon its ability to reduce ecological impacts due to sediment contamination in a timely and economical manner with insignificant negative consequences such as water quality impacts. Thus, the paper discusses potential impacts associated with the implementation of such a device along with treatment rates and operating costs.
