Fine "in situ" reinforced Si_3N_4 materials with improved thermal and mechanical properties were produced by hot pressing with the addition of Y_2O_3+La_2O_3 as sintering aids. Si_3N_4-SiC nanocomposites were obtained by the addition of 30 wt% of ultrafine Si/C/N powders to silicon nitride powder.rnThe influence of the amount of sintering aids and of the powder processing methods was evaluated. Densification behaviour, microstructure, thermal and mechanical properties were related to the starting composition and to the microstructural characteristics.
