The scope of this paper is the investigationof sub-pixel displacement estimation in crosscorrelationbased measurement techniques usedin aerodynamics. We will show, that a systematicerror will occur when using one-dimensionalsub-pixel displacement estimation algorithms todecompose elliptically shaped correlation peaks.First, an analytical description of this error willbe derived and it will be shown, that it can leadto a systematic influence of more than one pixel.Additionally, a general linear two-dimensionalGaussian algorithm based on least squares estimationwill be presented to allow for sub-pixeldisplacement estimation of elliptically shapedcorrelation peaks without any significant bias error.The performance of the here presented algorithmsfor sub-pixel displacement estimation, aswell as algorithms provided by commercial softwarepackages, will be tested with artificial imagepairs of random dot patterns.
