A wealth of Old English (OE) discourse studies in non-SFL linguistics traditions have shown that from verbal morphology to the use of particles, conjunctions and adverbials, contextual factors play a crucial role in the narrative organization of OE texts. Most of the current research in SFL to date, however, has focused primarily on contemporary texts, and there have been very few diachronic studies using this framework. Michael Cummings (1995/1996), Martin Davies (1996) and David Banks (2008) are among the few which have examined various aspects of older stages of English. The purpose of this paper is to examine the possibility of classifying OE texts into different genre types based on Martin & Rose's genre classification model (2008), and to investigate the ways in which OE discourse markers contribute to genre structures -in particular the mystery particle 'pa' (Longacre, 1976). Analysis of the sample data, 12 annals from The Parker manuscript of the AngloSaxon Chronicle, shows that discourse semantic conjunction system and the lexis of appraisal play a key role in OE genre classification.
