In recent years natural fibers, especially those lignocellulosic extracted from plants, have gained attention owing to their engineering performance as polymer composite reinforcement. So there is a growing interest in the use of these fibers on new technological solutions. Curaua fiber obtained from the leaves of curaua plant presents significant properties to be studied, but until now few thermal studies on reinforced composites of curaua fiber were performed. The objective of the present work is to investigate, by photoacoustic spectroscopy and photothermal techniques, the thermal properties of diffusivity, specific capacity and conductivity of polyester composites reinforced with curaua fibers. Continuous and aligned curaua fibers were added up to 30% in volume in the polymer matrix. The thermal diffusivity and the specific heat variation were obtained with reasonable accuracy, the values are consistent with thermal insulators material.
