Research and development of separation technologies for high level waste (HLW) treatment in Russia are overviewed. The processes developed in Russian institutions involving sorption and solvent extraction are described. The most advanced HLW reprocessing method based on the extraction by chlorinated cobalt dicarbollyde (ChCoDiC) is considered. This method provides deep recovery of cesium and strontium, and was successfully implemented at the Production Association "Mayak" on industrial scale. The use of this technology led to a substantial cost reduction (by a factor of 1.6) of further HLW vitrification and storage. Some recent results of international cooperative R&D in the field of separation technologies are presented.
