Nuclear fuel reprocessing was developed for recovery of plutonium for use in nuclear weapons with regard for ultimate disposal of radioactive wastes. Consequently, significant amounts of actinides remain in those wastes. France and Great Britain have become major commercial reactor fuel reprocessors of fuel from light reactors and gas-cooled reactors, and have paid special attention t5o waste disposal. Other countries have developed fuel reprocessing for their own use. High-level radioactive wastes from weapons production and from commercial fuel reprocessing are now vitrified in preparation for eventual storage in geological repositories. More efficient reprocessing methods have resulted in reduced actinide content in reprocessing wastes. However, there is much room for improvement in reprocessing as well as in nuclear waste management.
