The preparation of diclofenac acid (DA) - alkanolamine (diethanolamine, triethanolamine, N-(2-Hydroxyethyl) piperidine) complexes was tempted to increase the transdermal flux of DA. DSC and FT-IR studies demonstrated that DCF and each alkanolmine formed an ion pair complex. The series of alkanolamine complexs had a lower melting point and higher solubility in water compared to pure DA. A lipophilic enhancer system consisting of isopropyl myristate and and ethanol (9:1; EI system) produced a marked enhancement of DA flux from the alkanolamine complexes through rat skin membrane. Among the complex examined, the diclofenac diethanolamine had the greatest enhancing effect on the permeation of DA.
