Laigang was originally founded in 1970 and, with system reform in May of 1999, reorganized into Laigang Group CO. Ltd, with which as the core enterprise, Laigang Group was established, which now has 27 subsidiaries, including a listed company―Laigang Stock Company, and 10 units directly under the group. By the end of 2001, the number of its employees was 37417; total assets value 11.463 billion yuan worth; Owner's equity 3.997 billion yuan; original value of fixed assets 9.141 billion yuan; and net value 6.438 billion yuan. Laigang's main industry―iron and steel industry has converter system and electric furnace system with a total integral steel production capacity of 4 million tons a year. Its Major products include section steels (H-shape section steel, I-shape section steel, angle steel and channel steel), small and medium-sized section steels, hot rolled bars, ribbed bars, strips, seamless steel pipes and special steel, totaling more than 80 types, in 400 sizes, 15 brands of which have been chosen as national-level, ministry-level and provincial-level excellent quality products, with anchor chains steel as a national-level key new product, which has been certificated by 8 classification societies including those of China, Japan and the U.S.A.. Major products of non-steel production industries include steel structures, powder metallurgy and powder metallurgical products, carbon fibers, polythene engineering materials, light-weight water-proof wall panels and copper sulfate. Laigang is one of the 520 key Chinese enterprises, to which the state gives special support. It is among the first batch of Chinese metallurgical enterprises, which have had their quality assurance systems certificated in accordance with ISO9002, environment management systems in accordance with ISO14001 and occupational safety and health management systems in accordance with OHSAS 18001.
