MAGNETOTAIL SUBSTORM FEATURES FROM MULTI-POINT OBSERVATIONS

We examine several dipolarizations and a reversal ofrnplasma flow detected by Cluster at the downstreamrndistance of ~19 RE in the midnight sector of thernmagnetotail on August 22, 2001. These substormrnfeatures occurred during a sequence of substorm activityrnseen by the IMAGE/FUV imager. Findings consistentrnwith previous reports are the following: (1) there isrngenerally a decrease of the z-component of the magneticrnfield (Bz) prior to dipolarization; (2) the onset ofrndipolarization can precede the onset of significantrnplasma flow; (3) dipolarization is quite episodic inrnnature, consisting of multiple increases and decreases ofrnthe Bz component. New features revealed in this studyrnare the following: (1) the turbulent region associatedrnwith dipolarization can exhibit dynamo effect as well asrndissipation, (2) the x-component of the Lorentz forcern(j×B)x does not change sign at plasma flow reversalrnalthough the other two components do (indicative ofrnchanges in the magnetic stress consistent with shiftingrndominance of multiple activity sites rather than arntailward movement of a single activity site as commonlyrnassumed), and (3) the frozen-in condition breaks downrnduring dipolarization in several regions where the Bzrncomponent and the total magnetic field strength havernlarge values, different from the expectation of therndiffusion region associated with magnetic reconnection.
