On 16 March 2002, Cluster moved from nightside torndayside, across the high-altitude northern cusp during anrnextended period of relatively steady positive IMF BYrnand BZ. Combined Cluster and SuperDARN data implyrnthe existence of two reconnection sites: in the highlatitudernnorthern hemisphere dusk and southernrnhemisphere dawn sectors. Within the cusp, Clusterrnencounters 3 distinct plasma regions. First, injections ofrnmagnetosheath-like plasma associated with dawnwardrnand sunward convection suggest Cluster crosses newlyreconnectedrnfield lines related to the dusk reconnectionrnsite. Second, Cluster observes a Stagnant Exterior Cusprn(SEC), characterized by nearly isotropic and stagnantrnplasma. Finally, Cluster crosses a region withrnsignificant antifield-aligned flows. We suggest thernobserved SEC may be located on newly re-closed fieldrnlines, reconnected first poleward of the northernrnhemisphere cusp and later reconnected again polewardrnof the southern hemisphere cusp. We discuss how thernCluster observations correspond to expectations ofrn'double reconnection' model.
