IMPROVING SCIENCE OPERATIONS FOR FUTURE MISSIONS

A Science Operation Centre (SOC) provides therntechnical support and expertise necessary to assist arnscience community to plan and operate the payload onrnboard a robotic scientific spacecraft. Increasingrnperformance and productivity and, subsequently,rndecreasing cost can be achieved by increasing therngeneric nature of the SOCs. It is therefore necessary thatrnthe science operation community agrees, as soon asrnpossible, on a definition of “generic”. This definitionrnwould then provide a conceptual framework to bernfollowed during the design and implementationrn(including re-engineering) of new SOCs. Therefore, thernpurpose of this paper is to initiate the discussion aimedrnat defining this framework. It proposes what are the keyrnelements to be considered to assess and increase therngeneric nature of SOCs. It is based on the experiencernaccumulated, over the last 12 years, by the SatelliternOperations Group (SOG) team, located at thernRutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), in designing,rnimplementing and running SOCs for the Cluster, DoublernStar and Mars Express missions.
