The WHISPER (Waves of High frequency and Sounderrnfor Probing of Electron density by Relaxation) aboardrnthe four CLUSTER satellites performs high frequencyrnelectric field measurements in the Earth's spacernenvironment, from the solar wind down to thernplasmasphere. In active mode, the WHISPER behavesrnlike a topside sounder. It provides, via the identificationrnof resonances that are triggered at characteristicrnfrequencies of the encountered ionised medium, reliablernand accurate determination of the total density ofrnthermal electrons. In passive mode, when the transmitterrnis switched off, it becomes a classical wave receiver.rnThe 2 to 80 kHz frequency range of the electricrncomponent of natural waves is therefore monitored. Thernobjective of the presentation is to show that the thermalrnelectron density may be derived from the active and/orrnpassive measurements of the WHISPER all along thernCLUSTER trajectory, and almost everywhere, with arngood accuracy compared with other estimates.
