This summary, which follows from a presentation at thernCluster – Double Star symposium for the fifth yearrnanniversary of Cluster in space, aims at addressing thernsolar wind – dayside magnetosphere large-scalerninteraction. We summarize a number of Cluster resultsrnpertaining to the structure of the high-altitude cusprnregions of the terrestrial magnetosphere and to thernformation of the dayside boundary layers as a functionrnof IMF orientation. These have been the topic ofrnnumerous studies using the multi-spacecraft data fromrnthe ESA-Cluster mission. We explore the role played byrnthe cusps for solar wind plasma penetration andrntransport into the magnetosphere by examining therneffects of the orientation of the interplanetary magneticrnfield (IMF) and of the occurrence of the magneticrnreconnection process.
