FICON Inter-Switch Links (ISLs) were created to provide a solution to the bandwidthrnrequirements of complex parallel sysplex environments.This paper will review basic ISL concepts, how they are defined using Hardware Configuration Definition (HCD), with emphasis on design principles for fault tolerance, and examine the measurement data available for performance management and capacity planning.
