Cold weather changes wastewater treatment. Biological processes slow down, making treatment less efficient. Ice layers form on the top of exposed tanks, affecting the operation of these tanks, and potentially affecting any equipment located on the surface. Layers of ice can coat enclosures, equipment, and even access ways, making access to maintenance of treatment processes difficult, or even hazardous.rnAs Engineers, we need to keep these things fa mind during our design. Not only do we need to make sure that we are providing enough tank volume to allow for adequate treatment during these periods of slowed biological processes, we need to ensure that we are providing an environment fa which the operators can successfully and safely operate, and maintain their systems.rnThe City of Chatfield's Wastewater Treatment Facility deals with cold weather issues every year. As with all treatment facilities designed for cold weather operation, the design of the facility took into account the larger tanks that are needed fa the cold weather to make up for the slowed biological processes. The design discussion included questions like, "how will this work fa the winter?" and, "how will we service this equipment fa the winter?" However, even with this questioning, there are still a number of cold weather issues that the facility has to deal with, some of which have been solved through operational changes, other which have been solved through the addition or modification of equipment.
