DPIV Investigation of Vortex-Flame Interactions in Hydrogen Jet Diffusion Flames

A two-color Digitla Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) technique was employed to investigate vortex-flame interactions in hydrogen jet diffusion flames. Several DPIV images were captured during a variety of vortex-development phases, and the images were processed using cross-correlation procedures. Time-dependent jet-exit velocity data from DPIV were used as the driving profile for the DNS code, and the resulting computations produced a vortex that matched the experimental vortex. DPIV images were acquired in reacting and non-reacting flows for examining the effects of heat release. These images revealed dramatic changes in the formation and development of vortical structures. The effect of changing the fuel-jet composition in jet diffusion flames was also investigated using DPIV.
