The present paper evaluates the potential candidate nucleation species for soot models that reproduce the bell shaped temperature dependence observed for soot formation in various experiments. Selection of nucleation/inception species for soot modeling has been examined for acetylene, ethylene and ethane premixed flames. Dependence of the decay of the inception species in the soot formation with increasing temperature is the major focus of the paper. A new perspective on selecting inception species for soot modeling has been proposed to predict the bell-curve temperature dependence of soot formation.
