A diode laser absorption sensor which probes four spectral features of water vapor in the near infrared region to infer gas temperature near the exit of a scramjet combustor is presented. The sensor is configured to allow comparison of direct absorption and wavelength modulation spectroscopy. For the wavelength modulation measurements, a hybrid demultiplexer combines wavelength and frequency demultiplexing. Measurements using both spectroscopic techniques in the scramjet combustor under similar conditions are compared to show superior noise rejection and a doubling of the signal-to-noise ratio of the weakest absorbing feature with WMS-2f. Temperature results from a scramjet autoignition sequence and unstart event show the utility of the sensor for scramjet engine characterization and refinement.
