Research on optical networks has been an important topic in the European community ACTS (Advanced Communications Technologies and Services) Programme. The results of the work of the projects in the Photonics Technologies Area of ACTS are now being exploited, to support the rapid worldwide expansion in optical networks that is currently underway, and which is driven by the demands for increased network capacity for data (including Internet) traffic. The future European integrated broadband infrastructure will be based on dense wavelength-division-multiplex optical networks and will support a wide diversity of applications and services. Optical networks research and technology development will therefore be also a key activity in the new IST (Information Societies Technologies) Programme.
