According to the bibliography, the fracture process depends mainly on the strain applied to the fibre (tension, torsion, flexion, shear and tensile stresses), the fibre indentation and the environment (temperature and medium). The commonly admitted theory explains that the applied efforts should reach a minimum to start the fracture and not be higher than a maximum which limits the mirror area, as described by the formula F_(max) x R~(0.5) = K, where R is the radius of the mirror zone, and K a constant depending on the environment. Many different ways for applying the force and realising the fibre indentation have been widely tested and led to the tools we already know. We explored the environmental aspect by testing the fracture process in 16 different liquids, selected for their properties: molecule size, chemical properties and especially capillary activity. We assume that this material list summarises the significant properties involved in fracture propagation. This paper describes the theoretical analysis, the experimental apparatus and the measurement process; it summarises the practical results obtained by the measure of more than 1000 fibres fractures.
