A generalized decision tree is applied to the network design of choosing between ATM and Gigabit Ethernet as the standard for building a new backbone for a computer network. The analysis focuses on the tradeoff between price and the risk of choosing a technology that fails to be accepted by the market Historical data are used to illustrate that the model roughly explains market experience.
