摘要

In this paper, we discuss Specto, a Web-enabled, scalable object-oriented infrastructure for the online (real-time) and offline monitoring of applications in distributed systems. It facilitates the management of log (state) information in distributed systems. A log information is captured as an event which is encoded as an XML document and serves as a uniform and general data format. Whereas online monitoring is characterized by pushing log information to the user permanently, offline monitoring is more like a request/response communication process where a particular type of log information is requested by the user. The monitoring of distributed applications within Specto is independent of the platform and the programming language as long as there is an application programmer interface for generating XML documents. Respondeo and Mitto, two kinds of object-oriented web application middleware components, which are implemented in Java, provide an infrastructure for distributing log information in a scalable manner within Specto. Whereas Respondeo is a lightweight, message-oriented application server which is used as a multithreaded server component for the offline monitoring of applications, Mitto is used as a lightweight execution environment for distributing events and log infor- mation within distributed systems. The distribution mechanism of Mitto combines modern data push architectures with publish/subscribe techniques.
