Mobile software agents introduce a new approach to architecture and implementation of E-commerce systems. Mobile software agents are autonomous programs with persistent identity which move around a network of their own volition and can communicate with their environment and with other agents. Mobile software agent systems use specialized servers to interpret an agents behaviour and communicate with other servers. Mobile software agents may execute on any machine in any network without the necessity of having the agent-code pre-installed on every machine the agent may visit. Mobile software agents also represent a new model in the evolution of executable content in the Internet, introducing program code that can be transported along with state information. In this paper the mobile software agent paradigm is applied to implement an agent mediated ticket sale system for the Austrian Federal Railways. The software agents are supposed to reproduce the behavior of customers in order to create virtual marketplaces which are the paradigm of electronic commerce: User agents interact with shop agents and are enabled to perform ticket sale business procedures for the Austrian Federal Railways. The implementation itself operates on an existing legacy software. Current standards for knowledge interchange are taken in consideration as well as knowledge sharing and knowledge base programming methods. Different architecture concerning knowledge base design are discussed and applied to the implementation.
