SCC is a generic name for self-consolidating concrete that its properties vary widely according to the application used. A key factor for successful implementation of SCC is a clear understanding of the effects of the mix design on its properties. SCC is formulated to achieve four main attributes; deformability, flowing ability, resistance to segregation, and passing ability. These attributes are acquired by incorporation of effective superplasticizer (SP) and either low w:c, and low agg:c, or viscosity modifying agent (VMA). However, there is no correlation between the fresh and mechanical properties and the compressive strength is best approximated by the binder-space ratio. Because of the low yield stress and formulation, SCC is especially susceptible to segregation and high shrinkage. The resistance against sedimentation can be augmented by using fines, such as slag, ground limestone, and quartz that act as density modifiers. Similarly, the shrinkage is reduced by incorporation of filler, specifically non-pozzolanic one.
