Up-Converting Phosphor Technology (UPT~(TM)) has been introduced as an alternative to the traditional particle-based in vitro assays. The unique properties of up-converting phosphor reporters offer distinct advantages when used with biologicals. These include a lack of background because no biological matrix up-converts under IR, robust reagents because phosphors are chemically stable in biological matrices and do not photobleach, and multiplexed testing because different colored phosphors can be detected simultaneously using a single infrared source. This presentation will review the theory and properties of up-converting phosphors and their specific applications in rapid tests for cardiac Troponin T in blood and drugs of abuse in saliva.
