Sol-gel has been pursued as a means for producing vitreous silica of high intrinsic worth for optical fiber manufacture. Bell Laboratories has developed a gel-casting process to produce large tubes to serve as jacketing which comprises more than 90% of the optical fiber's mass. This sol-gel process uses colloidal, nanometer-sized silica particles dispersed in high pH water. The sol is cast into a mold, gelled by reducing the pH, and dried to a porous tube. The dried tube is heat treated to remove organic species, to dehydrate, and to purify by removing transition metals and refractory oxide particles. The purified tubes are then sintered to transparency at high temperature in a helium atmosphere. These tubes produce optical fiber meeting current commercial standards, demonstrating the net shape forming advantages of this sol-gel process. The talk includes introductory background on optical fiber manufacturing techniques, the fundamental science involved in the sol-gel process steps, and some of the engineering aspects of a manufacturing process.
