Nanoparticles and nanostructured materials have a great potential for the development of new applications in the fields of biotechnology and bidmaterials. New drug delivery and controlled drug release methods using magnetic particles are currently investigated. Alternative ways of introducing DNA into the nucleus of cells using gold nanocrystalls are already used. The development of a wide range of process technologies for the production and further modification of metal nanoparticles stimulates the cooperation of materials scientists and biologists. This paper describes the process technologies for the preparation of polymer nanometal composites and for magnetic metal nanoparticles that were developed at the Fraunhofer-Institute in Germany. Promising applications that are currently under investigation are new antimicrobial polymers and Au coated magnetic nanoparticles.
