We have used a scanning SQUID microscope to image vortices emerging parallel to the planes in the high-T_c cuprate superconductor La_(2-x)Sr_xCuO_4. These images provide a value for the c-axis penetration depth, lambda _c approx 5/ mu m, which is in reasonable agreement with previous measurements using optical techniques.
