In today's global marketplace, the demands placed on the operation of a company can be tremendous. Can an asset-based company substantially reduce its operating costs? Can integration of the supply chain and asset management affect your bottom line and reposition your company to meet the challenges of world-class performance? This paper reviews a wide range of considerations for investment in and justification of projects that optimize the purchasing of materials, increase operating efficiencies and maximize asset performance. To ensure improved profits in asset-intensive industries operating 24 x 7 x 365 days a year the focus must be on capacity and uptime. Reducing downtime, ensuring continuity of supply and reduced costs are the tangible benefits of the EAM system. For example, the EAM system's human resource/skill capacity planning modules ensure that the person with the right skills is assigned to a work order. While optimization of remote monitoring and diagnostics (RM&D) will ensure that that the correct parts are on-hand and that expensive multiple site visits are eliminated. The information the EAM system collects on the operating health of assets via RM&D helps to avoid unwanted downtime and allow for cost-effective "predictive" maintenance. These techniques allow a user to identify and repair a particular asset before an individual breakdown occurs or allow for additional capacity to be brought on-line eliminating lost revenue. The Return on Investment (ROI) value proposition is quantifiable, with hard, tangible, substantiated data framed within financial metrics. It is often developed as a top-level summary and can include a detailed report with solid, quantified benefits and supporting analysis. It must be designed to develop an intelligent business conversation with economic decision makers, and quantitatively address their cost justification concerns.
