At Microwave Update '97, Barry Malowanchuk VE4MA described his experiments with the large Russian Gs9b triode on 13cm. Since I have experience in building good-performing 7289 cavity amplifiers for 23, 13 and 9 cm, this seemed like an easy next step. After 3 years (on and off), it seems like I'm just getting started! On 13 cm, the design has been refined to the point of providing in excess of 100 watts output. Short of being lucky and finding a surplus monster TWTA, I know of no other method of getting this kind of power on 13cm at a reasonable price. But there are certain problems and performance characteristics that still warrant investigation. This paper contains notes on recent experiments and results with discussion.
