BCC has recently conducted a comprehensive business analysis report on quantum dots (QDs) and their commercial growth potential. The primary input to the analysis is U.S. patent activity. Over 700 U.S. patents have been issued relating to this topic area since 1986. Patent disclosures are even greater with 800 patents pending since 2001. With the explosive growth in patent activity projected to continue and the unabated flurry of recent research activities disclosed in the open technical literature, this paper gives a timely preview of the forthcoming detailed report. Overall the patent analysis provides insight as to how QDs dots may well play a pivotal role in the future growth and evolution of different market/technology sectors. Apart from the applications diversity, the analysis also reveals key players in academia, government organizations and in small, as well as large, business enterprises. Some of the most promising future market applications evolving from the nascent QDs industry will also be briefly discussed.
