The potential impact of nanotechnology on sensors, many of which depend on interactions occurring at the molecular and atomic level, is potentially huge. Nanosensors offer other important advantages in terms of lower production costs, less weight and reduced power consumption. The nanosensor market can be segmented into nano-chemical, bio, radiation, thermal, motion, and force sensors. While a few types of nanosensors are already in commercial use, such as ultra-sensitive (ppb) gas meters, scanning probe microscopes, the majority are still under development. However, taking into account the uncertainty associated with developmental products, the global market for nanosensors is projected to rise from $144 million in 2003 to $591 million by 2009.
