The critical functional components in both magnetic hard disk and optical disk data storage, such as the read/write heads and the storage media, have been incorporating nano-scale materials and structures for some time now. For example~*, in today's highest density hard disk products, bit dimensions are about 198 nm in the radial direction by 34 nm circumferentially. Buried in a disk drive that sells for under $100 there is a mechanism that keeps the recording head on-track with a precision better than 10 nm, while the head flies at a distance of about 15 nm above the disk. The average diameter of the CoCrPt-alloy polycrystalline grains in the media is about 8 nm. Historically, the rapid areal density progress of these technologies has been achieved both by shrinking of physical dimensions and by introduction of new methods to store or detect the data. Both magnetic and optical storage technologies are approaching fundamental barriers as their information density continues to increase. Ideas for circumventing these barriers involve further innovative approaches that incorporate nanomaterials and nanostructures, and that depart radically from today's implementations of the technologies.
