Technical possibilities to increase the capacity and distance in long-haul transmission systems are summarized and discussed. Based on the current status of commercial available performance and its extension, trends and trade-offs of capacity and distance are summarized with the consideration of OSNR. The dependence on repeater spacing and spectral efficiency is also summarized and discussed. Limiting factor of increasing capacity-distance products are described from the viewpoint of higher spectral efficiency and broader optical bandwidth. Several limiting factors such as OSNR, nonlinearities, dispersion and PMD are discussed with the candidates of solving technologies.
