摘要

In conclusion, older persons in the U.S. are "voting with their feet." choosing to live in what they perceive to be supportive settings. This may entail relocation to a naturally occurring retirement community such as Fountainview or. for the most fortunate, it may be a matter of aging in place in their own homes in a supportive community. Thus our task in the conduct of research in environmental gerontology is two-fold. First, we must take a careful and analytical look at the reality that surrounds us; where do we find NORCs and what are the essential characteristics of their social and physical structure? Secondly, how can we enhance the qualities which bring older persons to NORCs? In short, how can we provide the best of both worlds, allowing people to grow old in diverse age integrated communities and in the presence of their age peers?
