Two-dimensional (2D) lattices of microspheres formed by self-assembly from colloidal solutions have been used for laser-induced surface patterning by ablation, etching, deposition, and surface modification. The imageing properties of microspheres and the related intensity- and temperature-distributions on nearby substrates are studied and compared with experimental results on the deposition of Pd from aqueous solutions of PdCl_2 in NH_3.
