This paper presents an overview and some preliminary results of an ongoing research program for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at Southwest Research Institute~(~R) (SwRI~(~R)). The program was initiated in July 2002 and will be completed by August 2003. Eighteen exterior automotive parts from two passenger cars that were previously tested in full-scale at the Factory Mutual Test Center were selected and procured for this program. The experimental part of the NHTSA program at SwRI consists of three series of tests: micro-scale tests to determine the composition and thermal physical properties of the materials; Cone Calorimeter (ASTM E1354) tests to obtain ignition, heat release and smoke production data over a range of exposure conditions; and intermediate-scale calorimeter or ICAL (ASTM E1623) tests to obtain heat release rate (HRR) and smoke production rate data for a subset of the components over a range of heat fluxes. The experimental data will be analyzed to establish Cone Calorimeter performance requirements that correspond to a specific level of performance in the full-scale fires.
