In order to develop acceptable levels of flame retardancy in polyamides 6 and 6.6 when phosphorus-containing flame retardants are added, concentrations of at least 20% (w/w) are required which are too high for end-uses such as fibers and films. We have proposed that the addition of functionalized nanoclays may enable this threshold concentration to be reduced thereby enabling acceptable levels of flame retardancy to be achieved at lower levels of additive. Experiments using a range of additives including ammonium polyphosphate, melamine phosphate, cyclic phosphonate species and other P-containing species suggest that synergistic, additive and antagonistic effects are observed depending on the flame retardant-nanoclay combination chosen. This paper reports the results based on limiting oxygen index in the first instance in addition to the initial results of char formation derived from thermal analysis.
